Don’t boycott Scotland latest- Lockerbie Memorial Garden

I went through Lockerbie yesterday during my bike tour of Scotland.  I wanted to see how the people down there felt about Abdul Megrahi’s compassionate release.

If you want to get a general opinion about anything, a good place to get it is in a bar!  So i went into the Kings Arms on Lockerbie’s High Street.  I spoke to the bar-maid and a couple of the punters and they all said they were angry at the release and most people in Lockerbie were too.

I also met an American couple, Calvin and Tina Gilley from Madison Virginia, who told me they didnt think a compassionate release was appropriate.  I put it to Calvin that alot of folk in the u.k think Megrahi didnt do it, and he told me he’d like to see an inquiry about it.

Talking to all these people has helped me to see things from both sides.  I can understand the American anger, but i still think its wrong to boycott Scotland.  Don’t punish the Scottish people for the actions of the Scottish/Uk governments.

Don’t punish the people of Lockerbie.

Don’t boycott Scotland.

Nice to meet you Andy. Wish we had more time to visit in Lockerbie. The garden of rememberance was a very nice tribute to those who lost their lives (without any mercy I might add). I don't support the boycott but I also don't agree with the decision and would like to see more information on why the Minister of Justice decided to do what he did. If anything, his resignation might be appropriate. We found the people of Scottland (and England as well) to be nothing but pleasant during our stay and wish them no ill will. Sometimes politicians do things we don't agree with but I won't judge the whole country by one man.

Good luck with your blog. Calvin

I’m in Ireland and won’t be boycotting anything. To my knowledge, there are several reasons to think that Al Megrahi may be the victim of a miscarriage of justice. 600 pages of evidence sealed. Bush Sr phoned Maggie Thatcher and asked her to tell the Scottish police to ‘stop digging’. USA focus was originally on Iran and Syria as the culprits. Then they shifted to Libya – when the USA wanted Iran and Syria onside when they attacked Iraq. Too many unanswered questions … Evidence against Al Megrahi was purely circumstantial. Not good enough, IMO.
